Former USA Olympic wrestler and Strikeforce heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will finally make his long-awaited light heavyweight debut where he put his perfect record on the line against Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 170.
Evans, currently ranked number three at 205-pounds, is coming off a first round TKO victory over Chael Sonnen at UFC 167, giving him wins in six of his last eight fights. A former UFC light heavyweight champion, ‘Suga’ has been ranked in the upper echelon of the division ever since he won the The Ultimate Fighter season two tournament back in 2005. In fact Evans’ six knockouts and 13 victories are both UFC light heavyweight records. Combine this with wins over UFC Hall of Famers like Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin and he is the perfect opponent to welcome Cormier into the division.
Cormier’s move to 205-pounds has been a hot topic in the world of mixed martial arts ever since his training partner Cain Velasquez captured the UFC heavyweight championship from Junior dos Santos at UFC 155 last December. Instead of fighting his friend, ‘DC’, currently ranked the number one ranked heavyweight, elected to drop down in weight class and challenge current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, a man he has repeatedly called out in the past, for the belt.
UFC 170 is scheduled to take place on February 22, 2014 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The main card will air on pay-per-view following the prelims set to air on FOX Sports 1.
